Grand Canyon North Rim

The Grand Canyon North Rim is a beautiful trip if you find yourself in Northern Arizona.  Although the South Rim of the Grand Canyon is more popular and easily accessible, the North Rim is worth the visit. It is a totally different experience that compliments the south rim that most people have already seen.

Grand Canyon Lodge Fire

UPDATE As of July 13, 2025, the Grand Canyon Lodge at the North Rim was destroyed by the Dragon Fire.  More than 50 buildings were burned down when a lightning caused fire burned out of control.  Visitors and park service employees were evacuated safely and no human life was lost. We were lucky to visit here in May of 2024 when we took a day trip from Page, Arizona while visiting Antelope Canyon.  It was on our bucket list, and we are grateful to see this beautiful area. The National Park at the north rim has been shut down for the rest of the 2025 season and it is unknown when it will reopen. For updates, you can visit the park service website at https://www.nps.gov/grca/planyourvisit/north-rim.htm

How to get to the Grand Canyon North Rim

  • From Flagstaff, take State Route 89 north to the 89A cutoff. Once you reach Jacob Lake, turn onto SR 67 and head south.
  • From the South Rim, exit the east entrance and head north on SR 89.  Take the 89A cutoff to Jacob Lake and turn on SR 67.

Where to Stay at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon

Accommodations at the Grand Canyon North Rim are limited.  The lodge is the only place to stay, with motel style rooms and cozy cabins, the rim is only a few steps away. If you like camping like I do, then the North Rim Campground is for you.  If you don’t mind the drive, there is the Kaibab Lodge, and the Jacob Lake Inn are located within an hour’s drive.

For a day trip, add the north rim to your Page, Arizona Itinerary.

When does the North Rim Open?

The park has a short season due to heavy snowfall.  Season opens around May 15 and closes by October 15 depending on the weather.  During the off season, the road is completely inaccessible due to snow.  When you plan a visit, come when the park opens in the spring or early fall for the best time to visit.

Visit the South Rim all year long.

What to do at the Grand Canyon North Rim?

Taking in the scenery and hiking are the top two things to do at the North Rim. There is no shortage of adventure so check out the Bright Angel Point Trail.  It is a must do for first time visitors.  It is a short and fairly easy hike that has beautiful views of the canyon.  If you want more adventure, then hike part of the North Kaibab Trail or book a mule ride.  You may also want to take a scenic drive to Cape Royal or Point Imperial for even better views.
