That’s a good question.  In most cases, you cannot visit the area without a tour.  However, there is an exception.  Lower Antelope Canyon can be visited without a tour, but it is tricky. You need a kayak to get there.  Then you will have to hike the rest of the way.

Why are Tours Required

Antelope Canyon is located on Navajo Nation land.  It is considered to be sacred by the Navajo people. To preserve integrity of the land and beauty of the canyon, it was designated a Navajo Tribal Park in 1997. Since then, a permit and a licensed guide are required to visit this famous area.

Can I go to Antelope Canyon without a guide

There’s no doubt, you must see Upper Antelope Canyon and Canyon X with a tour guide.  There are no options for a self-guided tour. Even though, Lower Antelope Canyon requires a tour guide, self-guided access is possible.  It requires you to enter by kayaking on Lake Powell.  Then a hike is necessary to enter a different section of the slot canyon. Although this area isn’t as dramatic as the area offered by the tours, it is much less crowded.  It is also physically challenging.
