The History of Slide Rock State Park
Before it became a state park, Slide Rock was the Pendley Homestead. It was established in 1910 by Frank Pendley. Using his unique irrigation system, Pendley planted apple orchards. By 1912, the orchard was planted and over 300 apple trees took root. As tourism began in the 1930’s, Pendley started his own hotel by building rustic cabins for rent. Even today, you can see the original homestead, equipment for harvesting apples and the cabins. The park is one of the few homesteads still in existence in Arizona.
The Famous Natural Water Slide
The highlight of the park is the natural water slide. Slide Rock is an 80-foot natural sandstone flume that runs through Oak Creek. Unfortunately, algae on the rocks make the surface slick which creates a fun and fast ride that ends in a refreshing pool of cold water.
